April 2010 Village Voice

Date: Saturday 29 May, 2010

Village Voice for April 2010

AHS SPRING SHOW II -

THE RETURN OF THE SHOW VASES

Acol Horticultural Society held their Spring Show on the 3rd April in the Village Hall from 2-30pm with the presentation of the Trophies taking place at 4-30pm. There were classes which covered every interest from Daffodils to Pot plants, Handicraft, Cooking, Floral Art as well as classes for the Kids. The day was very well attended, and exhibits in many of the classes were of a high standard.

However, due to the awful weather we have had so far this year, many of the Daffodil growers had limited numbers of exhibits of show quality on the benches. In fact there were 80 vases less this year than last!

Accordingly, there will be another Spring Show on Sunday 18th April. On this occasion, awards will be in the form of rosettes, but it will give the exhibitors the opportunity to show what standard they are capable of achieving, given decent weather conditions.

Come and enjoy the wonderful show - and perhaps get inspired to have a go yourself next year!

THANK YOU, EVERYONE

If anyone ever doubts whether the residents of Acol have an interest in serving their community, then they can rest easy. Last month I asked for volunteers to deliver the Village Voice to residents in Plumstone Road and Minster Road following the departure of Pauline Gibson. Within a few hours of delivering the Voice I had received offers from three residents, and over the next few days a further three villagers kindly offered their services. Amazing!! Thank you everyone, your kindness and support is much appreciated.

Crimestoppers

Crime-fighting charity, Crimestoppers, is reminding Kent residents that they never cold call individuals and that any cold callers claiming to represent Crimestoppers are misleading the public.
The warning follows reports to Crimestoppers that two households in Birchington and Deal, East Kent, received calls this morning (9 March 2010) from individuals claiming to be from Crimestoppers selling security systems.
Crimestoppers advises anyone who receives a call that they believe to be suspicious to call Action Fraud, operated by the government's National Fraud Authority, on 0300 123 2040.
For further information on Crimestoppers contact Steve Mellers, Project Organiser for Kent Crimestoppers, on 07782 641 099 or steve.mellers@crimestoppers-uk.org

"Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people live full and independent lives."

Great British Fish and Chip Supper - Friday 21st May 2010

Want to do something different? Want to raise money where you live or work? Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 21st May 2010 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA's information and support services.

You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.

SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 7 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £35.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.

Last year we had over 80 suppers taking part in England and Wales. In 2010 we want to double that figure and ensure we can provide more support to spinal cord injured people.

The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to lead independent lives.

Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.

Community Fundraising Officer, Elizabeth Wright, says, "The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.

Be a part of something special and make a real difference to help spinal cord injured people gain access to the information and support they need to enable them to live full and independent lives."

For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 678 6633 xtn 229 or email fishandchips@spinal.co.uk or visit www.spinal.co.uk
